Just not the same sonic signature as the original paper hinged phenolic spider versions. Many feel they offer the best midrange reproduction of all the 515's if not all 15 inch speakers, period. Also, they are the only correct bass driver for many of the most collectible original Altec speaker systems.

As the dollar shrinks, and the number of remaining original 515's gets smaller, their price/value relative to the dollar will only go up.

I've seen Pristine/Mint condition pairs of those 515's sell for well over $4000.So your talking over $2000 a piece. Those were a Bargain...

In general I think prices of some Altecs are actually coming down a bit.Except for the rare exception on some Mint examples of woofers, drivers, horns.

Ex. The last 2 pair of 288-16G's sold for under a $1000.Something that was quite rare just a year or 6 months ago...

I guess what it boils down to is that there are enough buyers that feel they're "that good". The result is a market, and demand, against a supply that creates exactly these prices we see.

Priced an original Western Electric 300B vacuum tube lately?

My friend is a tube head and picked up a lot form a hammy's estate which had 6 '30's WE 300B that I tested for him since his tester doesn't do 4 pins. They all tested 2x+ min. He made $18k.
